God prospecting and "gold rushes" played a major role in the history of many states and regions in the Old West. There were the famous "'49ers" of 1848-49 in California. There were famous gold and silver finds in Nevada and Montana. The Colorado gold rush led to much of the early white population of that state, most notably Denver and the Cherry Creek region and several other places along the Colorado Front Range.

Interestingly, the "gold rush" really never died.
