Gold prospecting and "gold rushes" played a major role in the history of many states and regions in the Old West. There were the famous "'49ers" of 1848-49 in California. There were famous gold and silver finds in Nevada and Montana. The Colorado gold rush led to much of the early white population of that state, most notably Denver and the Cherry Creek region and several other places along the Colorado Front Range.

Interestingly, the "gold rush" really never died. Mining still plays a significant role in several Western states -- and individuals ready to take pick axes, gold pans, and sluice boxes in hand are uncovering significant, steady streams of income. Most individual prospecting these days is done as a hobby. But there are people in and near Western regions and rivers making a steady living panning for gold much like the early prospectors who fueled the gold rushes of the Old West.
