Mark Twain’s delightful link to Old West told in ‘Roughing It’
Mark Twain’s delightful link to life in the Old West is told in his tongue-in-cheek memoir, “Roughing It.”
The work tells of his journey and adventures in Nevada Territory from 1861-67. He went there with his older brother, Orion, who was the newly appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory. This great adventure tale supposedly is based on Twain’s own memories of the trip, plus heavy consultations of Orion’s diary.

How to find the best books about life in the Old West
It occurred to me awhile back that many people interested in life in the Old West these days might appreciate some simple, easy ways to find good books and other resources to learn more about the American West. Having grown up in a time when movies, television, and just about every entertainment media had ample references (though often mythical) to the West, this is a subject it never occurred to me might be helpful.

Real life in that time and those places we know as the American West was mostly not like the movie and television fiction we learn about the Old West. Real life was generally much harder, much duller, hotter, dustier, and had little of the glamor we learn from the movies.
